Alyson: An Exclusive Interview

AlysonAfter getting some attention with her single "Baby Come Back," dance artist Alyson's first big hit "What're You Gonna Do" hit #4 last year on Billboard's Top Five. Her latest single, "Feel You" recently entered the Top 10 on Billboard's Club Play dance chart thanks to a remixes by Ralphi Rosario.

ATLANTAboy recently sat down with Alyson to talk about her recent musical successes and the state of dance music today.

Where are you from originally?

Originally I'm from New York, but I moved to L.A. about two years ago to work on my music.

Who are your musical influences?

I love R&B and dance, so my musical influences are mostly Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Deborah Cox and Tina Turner. I can't believe she still looks so good!

What is one of your favorite memories so far?

Well I love going out in West Hollywood where I live, and just recently I got to meet DJ Ralphi Rosario at The Factory, where he played my single "Feel You" that he remixed for me.

Feel_youIt seems like everything has happened for you so fast. How did you make that happen?

Well I was working as a personal trainer at the time, and a client introduced me to produced Daveed. He helped me record my first couple of singles, which I sent out to record pools. I sent my first single "What're You Gonna Do" to Ralphi Rosario, which he liked and ultimately decided to remix.

Do you write your own music?

I write the lyrics and melodies, and Daveed arranges the music.

How did you get the word out about your music?

At first I distributed everything myself on the Internet, but I just got picked up by a distributor so my new album and singles will be available in stores starting in May. Right now you can get my music at online music stores like Amazon.com, iTunes, CDBaby and PerfectBeat.

Tell me about your new album.

My new album will include some new songs as well as the first dance singles that I released like the "Feel You" remixes by Ralphi Rosario and E-Smoove.

What do you see as the future for dance music?

Well right now is definitely not the finest hour for dance music in the U.S. My album comes out in May followed by a new single in the spring called "Nothin' More to Say," so I'm hoping to help turn around.
