Alyson's Wonderland

BY ZACH CAMERON, Special To Buzz

Take a good look -- that's exactly what people have been doing ever since Alyson's first single, "What're You Gonna Do" hit Top 5 on Billboard. Her next single is the hands-in-the-air party anthem, "Feel You," which she'll perform live at Rich's on New Years Eve. The single is already Top 20 on Billboard's Dance chart and is expected to reach No. 1.

Word is you're the next Kylie Minogue. How do you feel about the comparison? I'm really honored to be compared with Kylie Minogue. Kylie is an icon, she's had such an incredibly long, amazing career and keeps putting out the hits. I don't know where that comparison started, but I get it a lot.

Tell us about your latest single, "Feel You." I wrote the lyrics and my producer Daveed wrote the melody and arranged the music. Then of course many incredible producers have added their talents. Ralphi Rosario, E-Smoove, Jason Randolph, Dean Chronic and Jeff Barringer all did incredible mixes for the single release.

Why did you decide to pursue dance music instead of something more mainstream? I've always loved dance music. When I was growing up in New York City, I'd pick up mixtapes from the street vendors and that's pretty much all I'd listen to. So when I wrote songs for my album with Daveed, all the styles of music that I love got incorporated, especially Dance and also R&B, Soul and Pop.

The gay scene loves dance music and right now they're loving you have you ever fallen for a gay guy? If you mean have I fallen in love with a gay guy before, yes, sort of. I have a really close friend who I would have fallen for in a heartbeat if he wasn't gay. I mean head over heels. We're just perfectly compatible in every way.

Are your songs based on your own love relationships? Yes, they're all based on relationships and experiences I've had. I also write songs about things I see my friends go through. The songs are really personal and I expose a lot about what I've been through. That's what moves me to write. But it's also stuff that everyone goes through in relationships -- the angst, the drama, the pain, and yes, the pleasure and happiness, too.

How was performing at Palm Springs Pride? I hear it was huge. I loved performing at Palm Springs Pride. Everyone I met was wonderful and it was a gorgeous day. I'll be back again next year.

Madonna once said that her goal was to rule the world. What's your goal? Madonna is my hero. My goal is to keep making music that people enjoy for a long, long time.

So, what's next for you, Miss Alyson? I just wrapped the second music video for "Feel You," set to the Randolph Club Mix, and that will be released very soon. The first "Feel You" video is Ralphi's Club Mix and that's playing now in the clubs, retail stores and on select television networks. I'm working on mixes for my third single off the album that will be released in early '05, and also writing and recording songs for my second full-length album scheduled for release this coming summer.

Great. Something to look forward to. Can you give us a hint of what we can expect at your show? Nope. You'll have to come to find out.

You're a tease. Will we get a peek at your new video? Definitely. I'll have both videos for "Feel You" spinning in the club.

Alyson performs live at Rich's (1051 University Ave., 619-295-2195) on New Year's Eve. For more information on Alyson, log on to alysongrooves.com.
