Los Angeles , CA--
The Every now and then a new talent comes onto the music scene
that makes everyone stop and take a second look. A really good
band can get a listener to run out and buy a CD immediately just
to memorize the words as quickly as possible. A good album, a
really good album, never sits around collecting dust and rarely
leaves the CD player.
Over the past several years, Pointed has spotlighted a few of
these albums and made sure you knew to buy them ASAP. Albums we
have suggested have included “One X” by Three Days Grace, “All the
Right Reasons” by Nickelback and dozens more. We would like to
think that we were not wrong in recommending these killer bands to
our readers and hope that you will trust us when we tell you that
new comer Alyson is going to be one of the next big names in the
business. Don’t believe us? The blooming artist has already been
compared to the British singing sensation Kylie Minogue.
Alyson has everything it takes to be the next princess of pop.
She has a one of a kind, unforgettable look, the savvy about her
to know where she wants to be and how to get there and the sultry,
come hither voice that will have listeners calling radio stations
begging for more. With all of this, Pointed was extremely excited
to catch up with the songbird for a little chat.
Pointed Magazine: What made you decide to go
through the internet/Myspace promotions instead of the typical
air-play (and hope like crazy) methods?
Alyson: The internet is a big part of
my promotion efforts, it's an incredibly important tool for indie
artists. But there are a lot of other avenues you can
use to get indie music out there -- for example, I
send thousands of DJs my music through record pools for play
in clubs, I shoot small-budget music videos for my singles
that I license to DVD compilation companies for airing in clubs
and retail stores, I send my music to dance radio mix show DJs --
there's lots of things you can do as an indie to get your
music heard.
I'm from New York City. Both of my parents worked
full-time when I was growing up, so I learned to
be independent early on. I think that led to me
releasing my own music & running my own label, relying on
myself to build my career. It's a lot of hard work but I'm
able to keep control and ownership of my music and that's super
important to me.
Pointed Magazine: Your
bio says you’re an award winning artist? Which awards have you
won?
Alyson: I won the first award for my
music a few months ago, it was the "Best Music Video" award
for my song "Take A Good Look" at the 2006 California Independent
Film Festival -- it was so exciting! I actually had to give
an acceptance speech, but was totally unprepared! I was also
nominated "Best New Artist" at the Winter Music Conference
International Dance Music Awards and "Best Music Video" at the
2006 Hollywood Awards.
Pointed Magazine: What
made you get into singing? What made you want to pursue this
career?
Alyson: I've been singing and dancing
since I could talk & walk, & I did a lot
of school & community theatre and dance productions while
I was growing up.
Then I moved to Los Angeles a few years
ago and met Daveed, a songwriter and producer, & we really hit
it off and started writing songs together. The album came
together pretty quickly.
PM: Classify
your music.
Alyson: I think it's becoming harder
and harder to fit music into one category, and I think
that's good -- musical genres are blending and making everything
more interesting. I'd describe my sound as pop music
that blends R&B, Soul
and Dance.
PM: Who are your
inspirations?
Alyson: My biggest inspiration is
Tina Turner, I love her energy! She's fantastic, and I love
that she's still doing her thing as strong as ever!
I also draw
a lot of inspiration from Madonna, she's been able to evolve over
so many years and stay current and fresh, which is really
difficult in the music business.
PM: Do
you ever get nervous on when you’re singing live?
Alyson: I love performing
live, it's more excitement and adrenaline than nerves --
though I do get nervous that something is going to go
wrong with the sound system or something! But mostly
it's just so much fun!
PM: Where do you see yourself in 10
years?
Alyson: I'd love to be doing what I'm
doing now, writing songs, recording & doing live
shows! Hopefully my career will continue to grow and my
music will reach more and more
people.
PM: If you had 15 minutes
where the world is your stage and everyone is listening to you,
what would be your advice?
Alyson: I'd say to go full force
for whatever it is you want in life, and work hard to get it
but be kind to others while you're going for it!
